Former Australian Captain Ricky Ponting made a subtle remark suggesting India’s alleged pitch manipulation may have backfired in the ICC World Cup 2023 finals. Following this, social media has been buzzing with claims that the former Australian cricketer took a swipe at India’s cricket establishment.
Social media users claimed that Ponting criticized India’s cricket board BCCI and said “This is a win of justice against cricket mafia. Your money and power is still not winning World Cups for you. How embarrassing.” These claims suggest that he made this statement during an interview with Fox Cricket. An archived version of one such post can be seen here.
India Today found this claim to be baseless, as Ponting made no such comment against the BCCI.
A thorough keyword search across the internet yielded no news reports about the alleged statement, not even on Fox Cricket. If Ponting had made such a remark, it would have been covered in the news.
We also scrutinized Ponting’s social media handles but failed to find any such statement. We traced the viral claim to originate from the X account “@ahadfoooty”. This account has previously come under the spotlight for sharing false quotes attributed to cricket personalities.
Interestingly, many such accounts seem to emanate from Pakistan and Dubai. India Today has previously debunked such misinformation campaigns from Pakistan.
In 2022, this account falsely attributed a fabricated statement to English cricketer Nasser Hussain, who promptly rebutted it, calling it false and urging its removal.
Similarly, India Today exposed incorrect statements attributed to Indian and Pakistani cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis. All these misinformation campaigns display similar patterns in their dissemination.
Regarding Indian pitches, the actual comment Ponting made was, “It was very, very sub-continental conditions today. A wicket preparation that has probably ended up backfiring on India to be totally fair.”
So, to sum up, Ponting did not call the BCCI the “cricket mafia”, and a false quote making this assertion has been widely shared.
