Walt Disney recently announced that its TV channels in India and digital streaming platform achieved record viewership during the men’s cricket World Cup. A staggering 518 million viewers from India watched the matches on TV, while the streaming app recorded a peak concurrent viewership of 59 million during the finals. This comes as Disney competes with Mukesh Ambani’s JioCinema in the streaming sector.
Disney revealed that 300 million users tuned in to watch the World Cup finals alone on TV, making it the most-watched event in Indian television history. Sanjog Gupta, head of sports at Disney Star, stated this achievement. However, Disney is currently exploring options for a joint venture or sale of its India business.
To boost advertising revenue and offset the impact of a subscriber exodus, Disney offered free streaming of the World Cup cricket on smartphones via Hotstar. JioCinema also made cricket free to watch on phones. The International Cricket Council reported a record attendance of 1.25 million at the matches.
It is worth mentioning that Disney secured the digital and streaming rights to show ICC tournaments in India from 2024 to 2027 by paying around $3 billion.
Overall, Disney’s success in viewership during the cricket World Cup highlights the growing popularity of streaming platforms in India and the fierce competition in the market.
